Series on Urban Planning, Law and Jurisprudence: A Conversation about the book “The Right to the City and Good Urban Governance”

The Short Series on Urban Planning, Law, and Jurisprudence, organized by the COAC (Architects’ Association of Catalonia) and the Barcelona Chair of Housing Studies, will begin on January 16th.
The first session, starting at 12:00 PM, will center around the book “The Right to the City and Good Urban Governance” by José Manuel Bandrés.
The author, who also serves as a Justice of the Supreme Court, will chair a roundtable discussion. The session will also feature Esther Giménez-Salinas, Ombudsperson of Catalonia; Josep Maria Montaner, Co-director of the Barcelona Chair of Housing Studies; Victòria Camps, philosopher; and Juli Ponce Solé, Co-director of the Barcelona Chair of Housing Studies and of the “Law, Good Governance, and Transparency” collection for Marcial Pons Publishing.
Brief Summary of the Work:
The City: A World of Rights. The city is a project of freedom born from a collective spirit that aspires to create a diverse and inclusive public space for democratic participation and social transformation, where all its inhabitants consider themselves co-responsible.
It synthesizes the evolution of different civilizations throughout history, projecting into the future in search of the utopian or ideal city where all of us, without selfishness, live together as siblings in full harmony with nature.
This essay represents one of the most significant contributions to the study of the right to the city as a determining factor in the definition, articulation, and implementation of urban policies.
The exceptional nature of this work stems from its proposal for the political, economic, social, ecological, and cultural reconstruction of the city. These proposals are approached from fields as diverse as the theory of human rights and public freedoms, the political ethics of responsibility, urban sociology, and the principles governing urban governance in terms of resilience and sustainability.
