Housing the Majorities. Barcelona 1860-2010
New publication in the MUHBA Exhibition Catalogues Collection, featuring the exhibition “Housing the Majorities. Barcelona, 1860-2010.”
The exhibition showcases housing construction policies and access patterns for urban majorities throughout the 20th century in Barcelona. It was inaugurated to mark the opening of the new facility “Les Cases Barates del Bon Pastor in the Sant Andreu District – MUHBA Bon Pastor.”
“Today’s housing problems are the result of a long historical trajectory. They cannot be understood without the interwar crisis, the 1931 rent strike, the subsequent rent freeze, and the shift towards a culture of homeownership during the Franco regime—a shift that was interpreted as a ‘success story’ and which, in a way, conditioned the outcome of the real estate bubble. No solution can ignore these historical legacies and inertias; we must find answers through sustained, long-term action, without expecting immediate or entirely predictable effects.”
